“Including Real Madrid and its enemy”.. Zidane is choosing between 4 options to return to coaching
Now that Didier Deschamps’ contract as France coach has been renewed until July 2026, Zidane has come to terms with the fact that he can’t wait any longer before he returns to coaching again.
After his recent departure from Real Madrid on May 27, 2021, the France legend was able to take advantage of spending quality time with his family, but his plan is to find a seat next season.
And given that he’s a three-time Champions League-winning coach, it’s clear that options are limited. According to information from RMC Sport, there are four credible options:
Juventus
Juventus has a special place in Zidane’s career and life. He was distinguished by his experience in Italian football at the end of the nineties, he knows everything that the old lady’s club offered him so he would be sensitive to the idea of coaching this particular club.
The problem: Juventus are in a serious crisis as the club has just been penalized with a 15-point deduction by the sporting justice system, which accuses it of recording artificially inflated capital gains in its accounts during player transfers.
The board of directors resigned. European ambition is waning. So the context is far from being appropriate to the work in The Old Lady’s Frith.
Real Madrid
Zizou’s other favorite club is obviously Real Madrid. After his first experience as a head coach during which he won the Champions League three times, Zidane was recalled in 2019 after Solari fell through. Upon his return, he admitted: “I couldn’t say no to Florentino Perez.”
However, the results are not as good as expected by the end of the 2020-2021 season (exit from the Champions League semi-finals and losing the league to Atletico). Then the relationship with the Real Madrid administration became strained at the time of his departure in May 2021.
Since that date, exchanges have become rare and the relationship between Zidane and Florentino Perez is still frozen today. Given the unique bond between the biggest club in the world and Zidane, nothing should be ruled out.
Bayern Munich
The third club that could tick all the boxes to welcome Zidane is Bayern Munich. The former number 10 player has always had a lot of respect for this legendary institution of European football.
With solid foundations and financial means that allow them to play for the Champions League title every year, the Bavarian club has the means to seduce Zidane.
In 2015, while coaching Real Madrid’s reserve team, Zidane spent a few days in Munich as part of his training programme. He was impressed by the club’s organization as he observed and learned from Pep Guardiola’s methods. The downside to this option is the language barrier: Zidane does not speak German.
Paris Saint-Germain (enemy of Real Madrid)
There is a fourth option, which leads to Paris Saint-Germain. At the end of 2021, the Emir of Qatar approached Zidane to tell him that he could see him train at Paris Saint-Germain and succeed Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the 2021-2022 season.
As RMC Sport explained at the time, discussions began, but after reflection, Zidane preferred to refuse to bet everything on the French national team after the Qatar World Cup. Deschamps’ contract was coming to an end. Despite this refusal, Zidane did not throw the idea of coaching Saint-Germain.
